Ingrown toenails

An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail pierces the skin, often leading to inflammation and infection. Your toe may appear red and swollen, and is usually quite painful.

Conservative management of an ingrown toenail consists of your podiatrist gently removing the offending nail edge. This is usually fairly painless, however local anaesthetic is available for severe cases.

Alternatively, a longer term solution to an ingrown toenail is a partial nail avulsion procedure, or ingrown toenail surgery. This is performed in the clinic under a local anaesthetic.

During your appointment your podiatrist will assess your nail and discuss the most adequate treatment options, as well as investigate the cause of your ingrown toenail and suggest ways to prevent reoccurrence.
